Black Bush take GCF Inter-school tournament

BLACK Bush Secondary were adjudged winners of the second Berbice Inter-school Chess Championship held last Friday at the Berbice High School in New Amsterdam, under the auspices of the Guyana Chess Federation. The school’s team included Daniel Ramgadoo, Leroy Layne, Carlos Rahaman and Anel Latchman – students of Grades Nine to 11. They scored the maximum four points from the four rounds played. Eight schools fielded teams for that category of the tournament.
J. C. Chandisingh Secondary occupied the runner-up position, with Skeldon Line Path Secondary and St Theresa’s Primary finishing third and fourth respectively.
Four schools participated in the individual category. Hemchan Narain of J.C. Chandisingh Secondary won all four of his games to dominate that aspect of the tournament.
Elizabeth Ramgoolam of Black Bush Secondary copped second place with three wins and Yutesh Dyal of Port Mourant Primary was third with two and a half points. Levi Nedd of Manchester Secondary was fourth with two points.
Forty chess players from ten schools in Berbice took part in the competition. Students came from Black Bush Secondary, J.C. Chandisingh Secondary, Skeldon Line Path, Corentyne Comprehensive High, Berbice High, Tagore Memorial, Manchester and Canje Secondary. St Theresa’s and Port Mourant were the only two primary schools to participate.
The 2011 Berbice Inter-School Chess Championship was staged through a collaborative effort of the Region Six Department of Education, the Central Corentyne Chamber of Commerce and the GCF.
Krishnanand Raghunandan, Secretary of the Chamber coordinated the event while trophies were sponsored by Republic Bank, the Rotary Club of New Amsterdam, businessman Surendra Ganesh, D. Balram Shane and Imran Hamid General Stores of Berbice.
