THE People’s Progressive Party (PPP/C) vehemently condemns any attempt at intimidation by any opposition party.
According to PPP Executive Member, Robert Persaud, his party strongly denounces such conduct that causes fear, especially during this period when all efforts are aimed at consolidating the country’s democracy.
He made this comment in the wake of recent complaints from members of the business community, that they are being threatened to make donations to various opposition parties.
Persaud explained, “I met with vendors in Georgetown this morning, and prior to that, several store owners have been calling in to say that they have been receiving threats that if they do not make donations to a political party there will be consequences… we know who the individual is who has been calling these persons, and we know the party on whose behalf he is calling, seeking donations and seeking to intimidate store owners.”
According to the PPP member, this attempt to instill fear is viewed as a “nasty, dirty and vulgar” form of intimidation, which his party condemns.
The victims of these acts have already submitted statements and affidavits and he assured that the matter will be pursued by the relevant authorities.
Addressing concerns over the effectiveness of the police in dealing with previous matters of this nature, Persaud noted that, despite reservations that may exist about their effectiveness, at this point, it is important to entrust some level of confidence in the work of the Force.
He also revealed that the PPP/C has been receiving reports that two opposition parties have been falsifying persons as candidates,
“Ordinary persons names are being put on their lists; these persons have started a process of taking legal action against the parties, one instance with the AFC and APNU, and one concerns a very prominent individual,” he revealed.
