PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad (CMC) – Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board president Azim Bassarath has praised Daren Ganga’s stint in charge of the national squad, and says he played a key role in bringing younger talent to the fore.
The 32-year-old Ganga announced last Saturday he would step down from the captaincy, ending nine seasons in charge.
“Daren Ganga has served Trinidad and Tobago cricket with distinction over the years and is credited as being the inspiration behind the emergence of several youngsters who have developed into international stars,” said Bassarath.
During Ganga’s tenure, T&T won the 2004 one-day title, the 2006 four-day title before going on to capture back-to-back one-day titles in 2008 and 2009.
He also steered T&T to the second Stanford 20/20 Championship in 2008 before helping T&T reach the final of the inaugural Champions League T20 tournament, where they lost to New South Wales.
Bassarath hailed the news that Ganga would continue his career, noting that a player with his wealth of experience was still crucial to T&T’s development.
“We are happy to note that Ganga is making himself available to play in the national team and we value his vast experience and knowledge of the game,” he said.
“He will certainly be counted upon as T&T enter the 2012 season eager to break their drought in the regional four-day competition.”
Earlier this year, Ganga oversaw T&T’s triumph in the Caribbean T20 but came up short in the Regional Super50, when they lost in the final of the one-day competition to Jamaica.
