Armed robber gets four years imprisonment
ACTING Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry yesterday sentenced a man to four years imprisonment on conviction for robbery under arms and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
Nigel Wellington pleaded guilty to all the offences, one of which stated that, on September 20, being armed with a cutlass, he robbed Samantha Ragnauth of property valued $1.8M.
Another charge said, on September 24, being armed with a gun, as well, he robbed Patricia McPherson of booty worth $210,000 and had a .32 revolver and six live rounds of matching ammunition without being the holder of a firearm licence.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said, on September 20, Ragnauth was in her kitchen when Wellington brandished the cutlass and demanded that she hand over all her valuables.
After she complied, the convict tied her up with duct tape and made good his escape, the prosecutor said.
In the case of Mc Pherson, the prisoner jumped her fence, entered her home and robbed her at gunpoint but she raised an alarm and police on mobile patrol retrieved the firearm and ammunition that were in a bag that he dropped while running.
Prior to sentence being imposed, Wellington begged for leniency, telling the court he has a wife and two children to maintain.
