CMRC/GMR&SC Race of Champions Mayers leads Barbados to inaugural title

WINS, losses, disappointments, close shaves, collisions, a few laughs and a few sad faces amounted to an intriguing day of motor racing in the final leg of the Seaboard Marine/GT&T Caribbean Motor Racing Champions (CMRC)/GMR&SC Race of Champions at the South Dakota Circuit, yesterday. Thousands of motor racing fans of all ages turned out in their numbers to witness the thrills of the day which saw Barbados winning their first CMRC title with a total of 159 points. Barbados crushed Jamaica (73) and Guyana (62) with Roger Mayers, who participated in Group 4, leading the way in the individual category with 50 points.

Following Mayers was Jamaica’s David Summerbell Jr. (44); Barbadians Doug (42) and Mark Maloney(36), Guyana’s Paul Vieira (19) and Stuart Williams (19), also of Barbados.

In Group 2 of the Championships, Barbados’ Kenrick Husbands amassed 96 points individually to stomp Guyana’s Raj Singh (69), John Joseph (66) and Chet Singh (53). Barbados racers Mark Thomas (47), Edwin Corbin (33), Karl Waterman (27) and Jamaica’s Don Gilbert (13) were the other contenders in this group.

The Superbike category which consisted of three races had victories coming from Canada’s Kevin Graham, Carlos Rodrigues and Stephen Vieira.

GMR&SC 2B category had guest racers coming from as far as USA, Canada and Suriname. A keen eye was kept on the promising Malcolm Harripaul who drove the Acura Integra out of USA but he did not manage to cop a top spot in the one race he participated in.
