MANY political figures and opportunists are now praising PPP/C contributions to the political landscape of Guyana. But they are all hypocrites. No one can dispute that the longstanding members of the PPP made  enormous contributions to Guyana. They were the architects of the anti-colonial movement. The same people who critiqued and attacked the PPP now praise the party’s contributions to Guyana and some of them hold prominent positions in the government. I would not like to expose their names but they are a bunch of opportunists who would sell their souls for a position rather than act on principle as some of us who fought the PNC dictatorship over the past 28 years.
I remember when we were struggling for the restoration of democracy these same people were against us. We were lonely visionaries out in the streets putting up a fight for the dignity of the Guyanese nation but receiving little public support. Money was hard to come by. These same people ran us out of their yards when we were begging for donations. We were seen as a lonely bunch of losers.
The number of protesters and party groups were small, sometimes a few of us. We were laughed at and scorned by these same people. I remember one individual, the ultimate opportunist who was with the PNC wrote the harshest articles on the party and the Jagans.Today, that individual is high up in the government and there are many more examples of individuals who have reversed their positions on the party.
There is nothing wrong in changing one’s position on issues or about policies of government. But reversing one’s position for political gains is opportunistic.
