…as BMW, Mitsubishi Gallant cars collide
DO miracles still happen? Well, the drivers of Mitsubishi Gallant, PMM 8330, and an immaculate looking white BMW, PLL 1532, should be in a better position to comment.
It was a miracle, witnesses say, that both men emerged unhurt after a serious collision, early yesterday morning, at the corner of Meadowbrook Drive and Mandela Avenue (opposite the Le Repentir dump site).
On impact, one of the vehicles crashed into a lamp post on the western side of Mandela Avenue, bringing the post down before ending up in the nearby trench.
The accident happened shortly after 6:00 hrs, as the black Mitsubishi, driving west along Meadowbrook Drive and onto Mandela Avenue, suddenly emerged from behind a minibus which had stopped briefly at the corner on the main highway. The Mitsubishi collided with the BMW, travelling north along Mandela Avenue.
The loud impact of the two vehicles tearing into each other brought persons in the neighbourhood rushing out to enquire whether the ‘Grim Reaper’ had come to harvest. Speculation was rife that both men had been killed on the spot.
Ironically, both men were sufficiently composed to give statements to the police, and the minibus and its passengers remained unscratched.
Preliminary reports indicate that the accident might have flowed from inattentiveness and failure to exercise due care and caution on the part of the driver coming out of Meadowbrook Drive. Both vehicles were towed away, leaving behind a trail of debris on the roadway.
The accident came the third day into National Road Safety Month 2011, which began on November 1 and runs until November 30.
Police Traffic officials have said that the majority of accidents on the nation’s roads occur through speeding and drunk driving. The theme for this month’s observance is ‘Drive Wise and Save Lives’.
For the year so far, there have been 90 serious accidents, resulting in loss of 98 lives, ten of whom were children.
