Father on third murder charge for mental evaluation

JOHN Blanchard, 31, who, allegedly, killed his three children at their Soesdyke, East Bank Demerara home last month, made another court appearance on Tuesday, before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Swenarine-Beharry. The accused faced the third murder charge, which stated that, on October 12, he murdered Joy Blanchard.
He had previously appeared in front of the same magistrate, on October 14, charged with murdering his son, Daniel and stepdaughter Belika Blanchard.
Attorney-at-law Mr. Peter Hugh made an application for the accused to undergo a mental evaluation to determine whether he is fit to stand trial and it was granted.
The case was then postponed to December 5.
On the last occasion, Police Inspector Stephen Telford, prosecuting, told the court the three children were asleep at the time they were stabbed several times.
Ten-year-old Belika and her four-year-old brother, Daniel were pronounced dead on arrival at Diamond Diagnostic Centre, also on East Bank Demerara.
The third victim, Joy, who also suffered injuries, was in a critical state at Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH) until she succumbed on October 15.
The prosecutor reported that there are a total of 12 prosecution witnesses.
