-beneficiaries satisfied with new distribution system
MORE than 7,000 old age pension books have been distributed by the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security since the commencement of the distribution exercise on October 20 at the 156 distribution sites established across the country. Thus far, hundreds of pensioners have expressed their satisfaction with the distribution system.
Rudolph Singh, of Alexander Village, like thousands of other pensioners, said that he is very happy about the new system implemented by the ministry.
Michael Thomas, another pensioner, said that the system is very efficient and the officers were very friendly and helpful to him.
“ I did not have to wait for a long period like years ago, when I had to line up at the post office for hours, and when I arrived at the counter, to be told that my name is not on the list….this is very different, more efficient and the staff was friendly,” pensioner Bonny Paul said.
The administration, through the Human Services Ministry, has recognized the role that senior citizens have played in the development of society; and as such, has been investing huge sums to improve their lives.
This commitment by the administration continues to be demonstrated with the annual increases in old age pension. There are approximately 42,000 pensioners receiving $7,500 monthly.
Pensioners are being reminded to take necessary documents, including their 2011 Public Assistance and Old age pension books, along with their national identification card or passport to the distribution centres.
In addition to the monthly allowance, pensioners also receive a water waiver, free medical care at all public hospitals and health centres across the country, and spectacles.
Persons who are 65 years and older are entitled to receive pension.
With government’s continued support in alleviating poverty and enhancing the living standards of pensioners, old age pension was doubled in a single term of office, from $3,500 in 2006, to $7,500 in 2011, as against less than $400 in 1992, which was subject at that time to a means test.
