– Dindyal
GUYANA Power & Light (GPL) Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Bharrat Dindyal said, Friday, that the utility’s pre-paid meter service has gained a life of its own and the response to it has been overwhelming. He added that the system has attained momentum and 11,000 more meters are being installed, currently, because of the wide acceptance GPL expected at this time.
Dindyal said: “The rate at which consumers are coming in for the service is pushing us to the limits, in terms of being forced to expend US$800,000 more this year.”
He disclosed that a recent review revealed that even more have to be ordered.
GPL started with 9,000 such meters this year and now they have to install about 15,000 more, which is a pleasant surprise, Dindyal said, noting that there are many experiences of consumers using the system and praising it.
He said, due to the rush for the GPL awareness programme, more people need to have the pre-paid experience for themselves and that has been taking place rapidly.
GPL had introduced pre-paid meters for domestic use and small businesses, and sections of Georgetown and Berbice were chosen for a pilot project. Areas such as: Bourda Market, Newtown, Kitty, parts of Festival City and North Ruimveldt and Black Bush Polder in Berbice.
Dindyal said they were selected because they are representative of the wider society and each customer is provided a pamphlet outlining the available features and how to access them.
