Windies slump to 144 for five as Chanderpaul falls late
CHITTAGONG, Bangladesh (CMC) – Debutant left-arm spinner Elias Sunny engineered an all-too-familiar West Indies batting collapse on the fourth day of the first Test against Bangladesh but the rain-ravaged encounter appeared headed for a draw yesterday. Exploiting sharp turn on the strip at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, the 25-year-old claimed four for 56 to restrict West Indies to 144 for five at the close, still 206 runs adrift of their target.
Earlier, Bangladesh declared their first innings at 350 for nine after resuming on 255 for four, with captain Mushfiqur Rahim failing to add to his unbeaten 68.
Leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo finished with three for 81 while off-spinner Marlon Samuels (2-73) and Fidel Edwards (2-88), copped two wickets apiece.
West Indies then lost quick wickets to slip to 52 for three before veteran left-hander Shiv Chanderpaul top-scored with 49 to avert major catastrophe for the Caribbean side.
He found an ally in opener Kraigg Brathwaite (33) to add 62 for the fourth wicket – a partnership that propped up the Windies innings and put the tourists in sight off the crucial follow-on target.
Chanderpaul played positively, striking three fours and two sixes off just 72 balls but was out in the day’s final over, adjudged to be caught close-in off Sunny.
Brathwaite, meanwhile, was his typical obdurate self, facing 135 balls and counting just two fours in an innings hallmarked by patience.
He was the third of Sunny’s victims, prodding uncertainly forward and popping a catch to Imrul Kayes at short leg.
With the last two days completely washed out, West Indies would have been hoping for a strong showing at the crease when their chance finally came, especially with a draw perhaps the only option.
However, they lost Simmons (7) in only the third over of their reply, steering a catch to Raqibul Hasan at gully off a delivery from pacer Shahadat Hossain that bounced, with the score on 19 for one.
Brathwaite, bowled off a no-ball from seamer Rubel Hossain in the second over when he had scored just one, then added 25 for the second wicket with Kirk Edwards who scored 17.
Dropped twice off Sunny in his 38-ball innings which contained three fours, Edwards finally perished to the same bowler, lbw sweeping at a delivery of fullish length.
Stylish left-hander Darren Bravo dithered for 14 balls over two before nudging the sixth delivery after tea into Shahriar Nafees’s hands at short leg, to give Sunny his second wicket.
Brathwaite and Chanderpaul then combined to ease the Windies worries, mixing caution and aggression in a crucial partnership.
Chanderpaul, especially, was positive in his stroke-play, whipping the first ball he faced over square leg for four, before emerging from a quiet period to smash Sunny for back-to-back straight sixes to move in the 30s.
Both batsmen fell to soft dismissals and in-form Marlon Samuels stroked three consecutive fours off Sunny in the third last over of the day, to finish unbeaten on 17.
Earlier, Bangladesh did not have the dream start they wished for as Mushfiqur fell to the first ball he faced, popping a catch to Bishoo at square leg off the first delivery of the day’s second over bowled by pacer Fidel Edwards.
Naeem Islam then stroked 36 and Nasir Hossain got 34 from 47 balls, to hand Bangladesh precious runs.
