Bandits strike twice on Sunday night

A group of five men stormed the home of 35-year-old Corentyne vendor Nazeema Amoolayan on Sunday night, and carted off $2M in jewels, $480,000 in cash, a laptop computer, a DVD player and two cell phones. Police reported that at about 19:15 hrs on that night, Nazeema Amoolayan and her reputed husband Oliver Permaul, 30, were in the verandah of their Tain, Corentyne home when five men – one of whom was armed with a shotgun and the others with cutlasses – entered the premises and held them hostage.
Oliver Permaul was shot to his left foot and chopped to his left arm during the robbery, and has been admitted to the New Amsterdam Hospital; while Nazeema Amoolayan was assaulted about her body.
The perpetrators escaped in a waiting motor vehicle.
Investigations are in progress.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, police arrested the driver of the getaway vehicle following a robbery at Meten-Meer-Zorg, West Coast Demerara (WCD) on Sunday night.
Police said that at about 19:30 hrs on October 23, 2011, at Meten-Meer-Zorg, WCD, businessman Jaiprakash Basdeo (35) was attacked and robbed in the Saver’s Choice Store by two men, who were armed with a handgun and a knife.
The bandits took away Basdeo’s jewellery valued at $800,000., US$600., Gy$320,000., two computers and a number of cell phones before escaping in a waiting motor car.
The police responded promptly to the report received, intercepted at Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo, a motor car suspected to be the getaway vehicle, and arrested the driver. He is in police custody assisting with the investigations.
