Parents to be part of Peter’s Hall Primary spelling bee

INTENSE but fun rivalry is anticipated Saturday evening at a Spelling `B’ competition organized by the Peter’s Hall Primary School, just a stone’s throw from the Demerara Harbour Bridge on the East Bank of Demerara.
The event which is the brain child of the Headmistress, Ms. Pamela Browne, will be staged in three categories: Parents, Old Students and Children.

However, judging from the buzz around the school, the hype appears to be around the category involving parents.
To date, some 10 parents have already registered to participate and the word is that some other parents are also to come onboard.
According to Ms. Browne, the school has fully embraced the Ministry of Education‘s drive to promote literacy countrywide and she is of the view that with motivation from parents, students can excel in literacy.
Noting that the school is always thinking about hosting activities that involve families, Ms Browne recalled that in May, the first-ever Family Literacy Evening was hosted at the school and was well attended.
Bouyed by that success, the headmistress said she became even more enthused after the school, through one of her pupils, topped the East Bank District at the just concluded GT&T Spelling `B’ Competition.
The idea of staging a Spelling `B’ competition was subsequently put before parents at a PTA meeting and was readily accepted.
Several attractive prizes are up for grabs in the various categories and Ms. Browne is encouraging parents to come out in their numbers and support the venture.
There will also be spot what’s wrong jokes, and sentences with incorrect words and grammar which parents and students will be urged to correct, while teachers will highlight a number of frequently used words and phrases.

The event is all aimed at entertainment for parents, students and even teachers themselves, while they effortlessly improve their spelling and vocabulary, the headmistress assured.
