FOLLOWING Guyana’s terrific start to the 2014 World Cup qualifiers they have began to attract more attention and also caused major supporters who promised them incentives for good performances to keep their word. Yesterday, Presidential Advisor and Alpha United’s President Odinga Lumumba handed over G$300,000 to the team at the Guyana National Stadium prior to a training session. Lumumba promised that he would award the team the money if they defeated Bermuda in their second qualifying battle.
Guyana claimed a 2 – 1 victory over Bermuda after they sank Barbados 2 – 0, both at the Guyana National Stadium.
Added to that, Guyanese passports were also given to the new additions to the Golden Jaguars team Ricky Shakes, Deon Anthony and Alaniano Mounter.
He also reiterated the Government’s promise of awarding a house lot to each member of the team if they win their Group and progress to the next round.
Speaking on behalf of the Golden Jags was head coach Jamal Shabbaz who thanked both Lumumba and the Government for their aid throughout the tournament, saying that time and time again they have demonstrated that they can come to the rescue.
Shabbaz said “we appreciate all the support we have been receiving in these tough times because many hands make light work.”
