ON September 24 six Guyanese were held in St Lucian waters with quite a sizeable cargo of drugs (cocaine and marijuana) and a cache of weapons. The six men were on a boat docked off the coast of Soufriere. Later that week the security forces here swooped down on the home of prominent Guyana-born St Lucian national “Shieks”, where they unearthed two illegal firearms with matching rounds of ammunition. The police, for their own part, were able to make a connection with “Shieks” having gained valuable information from the detainees and from their Guyanese counterparts with whom they are in direct communication.
“Sheiks” is a wealthy individual who has acquired his assets by dubious means and with quite a questionable background, having been in conflict with the law numerous times over. His counterpart Bonny Clark (another Guyanese now dead) ran a mafia that drove great fear and foreboding in St Lucian society. He is also a prominent PNC activist.
Now one can draw a conclusion here: the drugs were destined for the lucrative St Lucian market while the guns and ammunition were meant for the Guyana landscape. For sometime now “Shieks” has been touting regime change in his homeland come election day when the mayhem would be precipitated by massive street protests, bombings and shootings. I urge the authorities in Guyana to be on their guard as this is no idle threat.
