KINGSTON, Jamaica, CMC – Brendan Nash withdrew from Jamaica’s training squad for next month’s WICB Regional Super50 championship in Guyana, with Chairman of the National Selection Panel Courtney Daley saying the West Indies left-handed batsman cited personal reasons for his self-imposed exile. “He wrote to the JCA on Tuesday asking that he be excused due to personal reasons. He explained that he was undergoing a challenging period in his life, as his mind was not where he wanted it to be and, given these realities, did not feel him being around would serve the team well at the moment” Daley told the Jamaica Gleaner newspaper.
Daley added: “He is not retiring or anything like that. He just wants to take some time off and will be visiting his family in Australia.”
The Australia-born Nash has appeared in 21 Tests and nine One-day Internationals for West Indies ever since his move from Down Under to the Caribbean to further his career and was elevated to the position of Darren Sammy’s deputy in Tests last November ahead of the tour of Sri Lanka.
Nash’s career appeared at the crossroads, when he was dropped after a string of low scores during this year’s home series against Pakistan and India.
His omission from the Test squad that will visit Bangladesh next month fortified that belief, and he was expected to feature in the Jamaica line-up in a bid to regain the faith of the regional selection panel.
The 24-member training squad includes a number of uncapped players, but several recognized players like West Indies fast bowler Jerome Taylor, first-class captain Tamar Lambert, all-rounder Dave Bernard Jr, new West Indies Twenty20 specialist Krishmar Santokie, and top leg-spinner Odean Brown offer balance.
At the same time, the JCA have brought Junior Bennett to dictate strategy, after former West Indies batsman Gus Logie replaced him on a short tenure earlier in the year for the Caribbean T20 Cup and the WICB Regional first-class competition.
Squad: Richard Allen, Alton Beckford, Jermaine Blackwood, Odean Brown, Damion Bryce, Dave Bernard Jr, Sheldon Cotterell, Yanick Elliott, Shawn Findlay, Lorenzo Ingram, Simon Jackson, Tamar Lambert, Kenar Lewis, Xavier Marshall, Jamie Merchant, Horace Miller, Nikita Miller, Brenton Parchment, Howard Powell, Andrew Richardson, Krishmar Santokie, Jerome Taylor, Chadwick Walton
