SVG heap agony on Grenada in Group E

KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent, (CMC) – St. Vincent & the Grenadines strolled past neighbours Grenada 2-1 yesterday in their Group-E match of CONCACAF qualification for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Myron Samuel and Cornelius Stewart scored in each half respectively, to give the Vincentians their first victory in the second stage of qualifying in the match at the Arnos Vale Multiplex.
Cassim Langaigne tried to spark a late fight-back for the Grenadians, a Caribbean Cup finalist last year, with a consolation goal, but this fizzled out.
Samuel opened the scoring for SVG in the 27th minute, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead at half-time, and Stewart beefed up the advantage with his strike in the 71st minute.
But SVG’s joy was short lived, when Langaigne struck five minutes later to cut the deficit, and there was a mad scramble in the remaining time for SVG to find the insurance item, and for Grenada to find the equalizer.
Neither materialised, and the final whistle gave SVG their first victory over the Spice Boyz in official competition in the last five years.
The result placed them third in Group-E on three points behind leaders Guatemala on a perfect six points, with Belize in second ahead of the Vincentians on goal difference.
Only the group winners will advance to the semi-final round of CONCACAF qualifying.
