– in dealing with the civil unrest in Libya, Syria
PRESIDENT Bharrat Jagdeo has described as “double Standards”, the position taken by some developed countries, including The United States and Britain, regarding the civil unrest in Libya and Syria, which has left thousands dead.
President Jagdeo, speaking to a large gathering of Muslims at the Peter’s Hall Masjid during Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations on Wednesday last, said Guyana will not subscribe to this double standard by those countries that seek direct benefits out of what is happening in countries such as Libya and Syria.
“The world has significant double standards, because an innocent life lost means the same…as an innocent life lost in Libya or Syria; and when the world stays silent on lives lost simply because they are friends with some of the big countries, but criticize other countries for loss of lives, that’s double standard,” President Jagdeo remarked.
He maintained that Guyana will not depart from the values that it stood for with regard to humanity.
The Guyanese Head-of-State also chided countries that seem not to care much about the killing of innocent people, and only condemn such acts when it affects them directly, an act he described as “protection of interest.”
He noted that there is more protection of interest behind the great humanitarian call by some countries.
“Forty six persons protesting peacefully were killed by snipers and some get invited to the White House; and all that the governments in the West ask for is to have dialogue, while other countries call for governments to go. That is not fair, it is not right; it’s double standards,” President Jagdeo argued.
He boasted that Guyana’s foreign policy will always remain independent, noting that the result of this is evident; hence Guyana is experiencing economic and political stability when there is unrest in other parts of the world.
