… Pakistan makes strong reply
TINO Mawoyo carried his bat for an unbeaten 163 as Zimbabwe were bowled out for 412 before Pakistan came roaring back on the second evening of their one-off Test in Bulawayo. It was a maiden ton for Mawoyo in his second appearance and the ninth best score by a Zimbabwean in Tests, spanning a marathon 645 minutes and 453 deliveries.
But Mohammad Hafeez steamed out of the blocks after tea, scoring an unbeaten 79 as Pakistan closed on 116 for one, 296 runs behind.
Mawoyo began the day on 82 out of his side’s 254 for four after batting all day on Thursday and claimed boundaries off Sohail Khan’s first two overs as Zimbabwe threatened to up the pace. But Craig Ervine fell for 49 when he sent a return catch to Junaid Khan, giving him his first Test wicket, and Mawoyo went back into his shell following a partnership of 94.
Mawoyo survived an odd moment when Adnan Akmal failed to remove the bails on an apparent stumping opportunity and he took advantage to reach his century with a single three overs later.
With Test debutant Greg Lamb by his side, Mawoyo did not cut loose after reaching the milestone, content to deal in occasional singles, though a rash of boundaries just before lunch took Zimbabwe past 300 by the end of a session which yielded just 69 runs.
In the first over after the interval, Mawoyo signalled his intent to play a few more shots with a four off Azhar Ali. Lamb struggled to follow suit though and was lbw to Saeed Ajmal for 39 with the partnership five short of 100.
The tail offered little in support of Mawoyo, who reached 150 with a leg-side single, though a big six from number 11 Chris Mpofu off Ajmal took Zimbabwe past 400. Debutant Aizaz Cheema wrapped up the tail to finish with four for 79, while Ajmal claimed four for 143 in 54 overs.
In reply, Pakistan lost Taufeeq Umar lbw to Kyle Jarvis in the second over, but after that it was all about Hafeez. He claimed three successive fours in the next over, though the third should have been caught by Brendan Taylor at slip.
He stormed into the 40s at a run a ball, before stumbling as he passed 50, but as the close neared he freed his arms again, hitting Lamb for six and taking two boundaries off the last over of the day to take his partnership with Ali (27n.o.) to 108. (Eurosport)
