I HAD promised not to waste time writing and complaining of Caribbean Airlines (CAL)and its treatment of Guyanese at their wicked hands. After reading what’s in the news lately on maltreatment of Guyanese, I am compelled to come out of my cocoon where CAL is concerned.
In my last letter I wrote that CAL will come creeping and weeping to President Jagdeo and the Tourism Minister of Guyana but their disdain for Guyanese will never change.
Then when I read CAL will set up a special lounge in Trinidad for Guyanese, I warned again that CAL will only do this to keep Guyanese off their backs so to be out of sight and out of mind while in-transit in their country.
Thursday September 1 2011, SN headlines reads. Stranded passengers back home.
The report went on to say: “Two hundred and ten of the 229 Caribbean Airlines passengers who were forced to make the JFK International Airport their home since Monday finally arrived in Guyana this morning with some of them facing more woes as all their luggage was not on the plane.”
Editor, I hope that those in authority read this vital important part where the report if true, said: ” Two hundred and ten of two hundred of twenty nine passenger arrived in Guyana “
This must be an eye opener for the Tourism Minister knowing there are more passengers on CAL going to Guyana than those that are dropped off in Trinidad first.
Chronicle report:
Government strongly protests CAL treatment of stranded Guyanese
MINISTER of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Mr. Manniram Prashad said yesterday that the callous treatment of Guyanese passengers by Caribbean Airlines Limited (CAL) is unacceptable and the Government of Guyana strongly protests this kind of conduct.
He disclosed that this is not the first time that Guyanese passengers have experienced problems with the airline.
Sir, kindly read the horrible experience Guyana had gone through: one blogger said this was going on since 1980 and when in Trinidad they speak up for their rights security was called in on them.
Mister minister, if you refused to believe that then trust me when I say that very thing happened to me in Trinidad in 1989 on my way for my mom’s funeral.
One customs officer wanted to check my suitcase and I told him I was in-transit to Guyana and not staying in Trinidad.
He insisted that I open my suitcase and I refused to do so since I saw they took away two appliances and stashed it under their desks from two elderly Guyanese women.
They had the nerves to call security on me. Sir, I asked security to shoot me and bust open my chest but I will never allow these people to open my suitcase to take out what they want then tell me I am not allowed to take that to Guyana.
Thank heavens a commotion ensued and someone called a superior. I then revealed to the supervisor to take a look under the customs officer’s desk.
They found the two appliances and were taken away by the supervisor and given back to the two elderly ladies.
I was allowed not to open my suitcase and went on my way to Guyana.
Mister minister, the time for talk and threats about having other carriers must come to a full stop now and not yesterday. Now! Sir!
For too many years now Guyanese are being maltreated at the hands of Trinis and only a full stop will end it.
Negotiate now with other airlines for direct flights from Canada and US to Guyana. Please Sir, no more stopovers in Trinidad.
