At LBI Masjid…

Scores get Ramadan food hampers from Muslim NGOs
SCORES of people were presented with food hampers, last Wednesday, at the La Bonne Intention (LBI) Masjid, on East Coast Demerara.
Chairman of the Lower East Coast Guyana Islamic Trust, Brother Imtiaz A. Zafarali said the presentation was in keeping with the observance of Ramadan, the Muslim month of charity, when they give to those considered less fortunate.
He explained that the cash to purchase the giveaways were donated by the non- governmental organisations Human Concern International (HCI) and Guyana International Relief Organisation (GIRO).
As to the impact of the largess, Zafarali said: “This will be of great assistance to those families who are in need and I want to thank the donors who made this possible.”
He said similar such distributions were made countrywide and continue on a daily basis.
HCI is a Canadian charity existing to help alleviate human suffering by investing in humanity and, since 1980, has contributed some $90M towards facilitating sustainable development, through long term projects and maintaining human dignity by providing immediate relief assistance in many poor and strife torn countries and local causes in Canada, Zafarali pointed out.
GIRO offers a wide range of services to numerous needy Guyanese, both Muslims and non-Muslims, he said.
GIRO relief services include monthly medical clinics, food and clothing distribution, orphan sponsorship, assistance to poor Muslim families to build homes and start micro-economic ventures, circumcision and help for medical care and surgery, as well as medical outreach programmes and disaster relief, Zafarali added.
He said those services are funded mainly through the kind donations and contributions of generous Muslim brothers and sisters, in the form of Sadaqah, Zakaah, Khairaat, sponsorship, alms, donations, grants and regular contributions.
