STABROEK News journalist Gaulbert Sutherland has won the Media Trends Award for his “excellent” coverage of issues surrounding women and children in Guyana, and was presented with his prize yesterday. Sutherland received a cheque for $100,000 from Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Priya Manickchand, at the ministry on Cornhill Street, in Georgetown.
Minister Manickchand congratulated the winner and his newspaper, and observed that there has been improvement in the way the press has been reporting recently.
She noted that there are media houses which are conscious of their legal and moral obligations; however, there are those who are equally not. She called to mind the important role of the editors in not allowing “dangerous misinformation” to be published.
Manickchand said Sutherland did an excellent job with his articles, which were well researched.
She said it was as though Sutherland went searching for news-worthy stories in places outside of Georgetown.
Head of the ministry’s Documentation Centre, Ms Yvonne Stephenson, said yesterday that Sutherland has managed to meet the standards of the ministry and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).
In the competition, she said there were three judges who unanimously agreed that Sutherland should be given the prize. A fourth was appointed to review the work of the three; he too agreed with the honours.
Sutherland commented that these are the incentives needed to help journalists do a better job.
