– Surujbally
CHAIRMAN of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM), Dr Steve Surujbally, has said that persons who have been registered under the second round of the ‘Claims and Objections’ exercise will receive their Identification Cards (ID) by the end of next week as the verified finger prints of those registered under this phase have returned from the United States of America (USA). Surujbally told this publication, via telephone yesterday, that after the cross-matching exercise, the stage is now set for publishing of the Revised List of Electors (RLE) which will ultimately lead to the publishing of the Final List of Electors (FLE).
However, he did not divulge how early the RLE will be published.
Meanwhile, the GECOM chairman noted that some 7,280 persons were registered under this re-opened Claims and Objections exercise, which commenced on July 25 and lasted for 13 days. However, that figure can change after the RLE is published.
According to Surujbally, the Commission is well on course for the holding of upcoming regional and general elections before the constitutional December 28 due date.
Meanwhile, Surujbally took a swipe at the People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR), now APNU (A Partnership for National Unity) which claimed that it did not see the list of those who registered under the second phase of the Claims and Objections exercise.
According to the GECOM Chairman, the Commission “granted the list of the new registrants to the party since last week”.
He stated that, according to law, the body was supposed to give a list of the names only but even went a bit further and granted the addresses of the registrants.
