Police impound buses operating outside their zones

as many head for Jamzone activities at Splashmin’s
POLICE traffic ranks on the East Bank Demerara yesterday pulled in and impounded some 20 minibuses at the Providence Police Station for traffic-related offences, as the Traffic Department mounted routine motor-vehicle checks along the main East Bank Demerara roadway.
Most of the buses pulled in were found to be travelling outside of their zones. As a result, several commuters heading for the popular Jamzone activities at Splashmin’s Fun Park and Resort at Madewini on the Linden-Soesdyke Highway were disappointed.

Buses pulled into the Providence Police Station on the East Bank Demerara.

They either had to get off the buses and go through the rigors of trying to get on other buses designated for that route, or otherwise accompany the buses to the Providence Police Station where they spent the remainder of the day.
Buses were pulled in for other traffic offences.

In the dragnet, buses from at least seven road service areas were affected. These were Nos. 31; 32, 40, 41, 45 and 50.
The offences committed were breaches of the road service licence by operating outside of routes for which they were licensed, without applying for, and securing the necessary temporary permits to enable them to ply the route.

Police traffic officials have advised that persons wishing to apply for permits to travel outside of their stipulated zones are required to go the Brickdam Police Traffic Office between 8:00 and 11:00 hrs and make a request. Permits are issued in the afternoon, commencing at 15:00 hrs. All traffic documents in relation to the driver and motor vehicle should be presented when making the application. It is important to note that the driver’s licence to be presented to the police should be for the person who will be driving the vehicle out of zone requested, and no one else.
