-Young Warriors upset Brushie’s XI to advance
THANKS to Trishanie Cort’s unbeaten half- century, Rose Hall Town Metro Female line-up recorded an easy victory over All Star United from Linden, to move into the quarterfinals of the inaugural Kares Engineering and Bushy Park Sawmills sponsored nationwide 10/10 tapeball competition yesterday.
Playing at the Area ‘H’ ground in Rose Hall, the home team scored 115 for 3 from their 10 overs, with Cort hitting three fours and one six in her unbeaten 50, while she received support from Tessa Park who struck three fours and one six in her 23.

Even though they scored 51 for 8 from their 10 overs, All Star United were jovial in defeat, cheering every run that was scored, with extras top scoring with 14 while Iris Blunt made 11 (2×4) against the bowling of Park and Singh who took two wickets each for 7 and 11 runs respectively for RHT Metro.

In the second match of the day, Cotton Tree Die Hard chalked up a hard fought seven runs victory over Wolf Warriors of West Demerara.

Batting first, Cotton Tree Die Hard scored 92 for 7 from their 10 overs of which Romesh Budhram topscored with 44 that included three sixes and the same number of fours, while Shazad Gafoor offered support with 29 (3×6, 1×4).

Azad Azeez took 3 for 13 and Mahendra Nandkishore 2 for 17 for Wolf Warriors who ended on 85 for 7 from their 10 overs, despite Lukesh Dhanpaul and Safraz Khan contributing 23 and 17 respectively.

They needed 11 from the final over which was bowled by Keith Fraser (1-8), but all they got was three of those runs, as the bowler maintained the stranglehold set by Akram Rahaman who had earlier taken 2 for 32 for Cotton Tree Die Hard.

The final match of the day, provided lots of excitement for the small but appreciative crowd on hand which included Public Relations Officer of the Berbice Cricket Board, Hilbert Foster.

It was contested between Karibee Strikers of Corentyne Berbice and Falcon Girls from Leguan, which saw the former winning the toss and scoring 118 for 8 from their 10 overs, with Christina Mathieson who fought off the attack of nausea feelings, topscoring with 40.
Extras also contributed to the Ancient County total with 36, inclusive of 35 wides while Alicia Azad took 3 for 11 for Falcon Girls who ended their 10 overs on 96 for 5, after being 21 without loss midway through the second over of their reply.

Sue Li led her team’s batting with 32 and received support from Alicia Narine who made 15, while extras contributed a healthy 25 to the team from one of the islands which make up the Cinderella County of Essequibo, as Onica Tello nabbed 2 for 10 for Karibee Strikers.

On Saturday, Essequibo’s Young Warriors recorded an upset victory via the Super Over, over the highly favoured Brushie’s XI, after their round of 16 encounter ended in a tie at the Walton Hall ground in Essequibo.

Also in winners’ row on that day which was affected by rain, were Essequibo’s Cotton Field Wild Oats who defeated Progressive Youth and Dyna’s Bravados, a winner over Rising Star XI.

In the most entertaining game of the day, Young Warriors took first strike and closed on 75 for 6 off the allotted overs with Satnarine Jattan hitting 24, while Simon Narine supported with 20.

In their turn at the crease, Brushie’s XI through panic and obvious insipidness could only manage to level the scores at 75 for 8 after needing one run off the last three balls of the final over, where they suffered three run outs in their attempt to achieve same, forcing the game into the Super Over which they lost.

Young Warriors batted first and posted 13 for 1 before restricting the highly favoured Brushie’s XI to 11 for 1 to claim victory by two runs and a place in the last eight.

In the other games, Rising Stars were routed for a paltry 42 in 9.5 overs through a magnificent spell of bowling from fast bowler Mervyn Vyphuis who captured 3 for 1 from 1.5 overs.

He received good support from Seon Sertima who claimed 2 for 4 for Dyna’s Bravados, who reached 45 for 5 from 6.1 overs, to walk away with a five wicket victory.

Progressive Youth then went down to Cotton Field Wild Oats by five wickets, after scoring 80 for 9 from their 10 overs, of which Seenauth Bissessar topscored with 27, while Ricky Persaud made 15.

Ravindra Parsram grabbed 2 for 5, while Travis Hyman and Fazir Khan, also claimed two wickets apiece for Cotton Field who reached 85 for 5 from 9.1 overs, with Shiv Madholall and Parsram contributing 20 runs each, while Anthony Carter took 2 for10.

The action continues with the quarterfinals which will be played at both the Georgetown Cricket Club and Guyana Softball League grounds this weekend, before shifting to the Guyana National Stadium for the final four and finals on Sunday 4th September, to be followed by the giga concert featuring Jamaica’s reggae artiste Shaggy.
