A ten-year-old boy was rushed to the Georgetown Public Hospital yesterday afternoon, suffering multiple injuries, after a motor car, rammed by another at the corner of Norton Street and Cemetery Road, went skidding up the road, hit the child off of a bridge and sent him flying into a trench. Persons who witnessed the accident, recalled that it was around 14:30hrs and Winston Duncan had just walked out of his yard and onto the road, when a blue Carina motor car PGG 1129, heading south along Cemetery Road, failed to stop at the intersection and crashed into a white Toyota GAIA PLL 7605, proceeding east along Norton Street. On impact, motor car PLL 7605, owned by the Mayor and City Council, was sent skidding up Norton Street.
On hearing the loud impact and seeing the vehicle skidding towards him, the child tried desperately to get out of the way, and darted towards a concrete bridge he considered to be a safe haven. However, the out-of-control vehicle ploughed into him, pitched him into a roadside trench, then hit and split the base of a lamp post, before finally coming to a halt on its side.
A man who witnessed the accident plunged into the trench and pulled the child out, while others rushed him to the hospital. At the hospital, his mother, Michelle Gittens, broke down as she saw her only son lying in bed.
Back at the scene of the accidents, residents hurriedly turned off the main switches in their homes as power lines from the fallen utility pole were sparking on the ground.
Police arrived on the scene quickly and took charge. Both vehicles were removed by crash truck.
