CBR acknowledges significant benefit under PPP/C
THE Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) organisation held its fourth Regional Conference in the Queenstown Rehabilitation Centre on Essequibo Coast last Thursday. The President, Mr. Lloyd Griffith said, under the theme ‘The involvement of the disabled community in Guyana’s development’, it focused on the progress of the disability movement in Guyana.
According to him, the CBR, which is registered under the Friendly Societies Act, started 1992 and has benefited significantly under the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) Government.
Griffith, who was once a teacher at Anna Regina Multilateral School but is now blind, was high in praise for the legislation, recently passed by the Government in Parliament, that gives persons living with disabilities the right to employment, education, health, recreation and accessibilities in the country.
He said the CBR has come a far way and its members have derived benefit from many training and skills programmes and the Government, each year, gives the organisation a $500,000 subvention to execute its agenda of activities.
Updating members on the past year’s progress, Griffith said several workshops were conducted but pointed out that transportation costs to attend were very expensive.
He also reported that the organisation was assisted by several private businesses, among them Banks DIH Limited, Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL), Alfro Alphonso Group of Companies, Derrick Gobin, David Shurland and Suddie Pharmacy, to help execute its activities for the year ended August 3.
