Minister Anthony salutes power-lifter Dawn Barker on her world ranking

MINISTER of Sport  Dr Frank Anthony on Thursday took time out to congratulate Guyana’s world-ranked female power-lifter Mrs Dawn Barker on her recent world ranking.Minister Dr Anthony said at his office: “On behalf of the government and on behalf of the ministry we are indeed very proud of your achievement in the 84 plus kilogram class. “You are now the number one female power-lifter in Guyana, the Caribbean and North America and your fifth place world ranking has really placed us on the highest ranking that one can hope for.
“We know that with your training and  Guyana Powerlifting Association (GPA) president Peter  Green’s ambition that fifth is not good enough. We know that you have the capability of moving up because I recall that about a year and a half ago, at Critchlow Labour College, when they held the tournament that I was first introduced to you. Green was telling me, ‘Look at Dawn Barker, she is going to bring back medals to us and make our country proud’. Go for it!
“And later on we have seen how you have developed and made all of us in this country proud. We are indeed very happy in your achievement and we look forward to you continuing in power lifting and going to that number one spot.
“It is not as elusive as you would think, once you put in the hard work and you have the capacity to do that. Keep up the hard work and you would get us there and we are with you. Congratulations once again. We see this association as one of the more successful sport organisations in the country.”
