Dominant Headquarters retain GPF title

HEADQUARTERS once again dominated the other divisions to comfortably retain their title in the 57th annual Guyana Police Force Track and Field Championships, staged at the Police Sports Club (PSC) Ground over the past week. On the final day Headquarters accumulated a mammoth total of 582 points to claim the title ahead of second-place finishers, ‘A’ Division with 314 points, ‘B’ Division – third (236 points) and ‘C’ Division – fourth with 166 points.
The final day saw keen competition between the Headquarters athletes who dominated the female sprint events in which former national junior champions Leota Bobb (12.2s) and Nadine Rodrigues (12.4s) claimed the top two spots in the 100m.
Bobb managed to maintain the fastest woman title but like last year, Rodrigues (25.3s) once again exacted her revenge in the women’s 200m where she trounced Bobb (25.8s) and Shanna Thornhill (26s) who finished second and third, respectively.
However, Thornhill won the 400m title clocking one minute flat to defeat Rodrigues who ran 1:03.7s and Tenisha Punch who stopped the clock at 1:06.3s.
In the long distance department, national senior athlete Dennis Horatio remained unbeaten in the 5 000m and 1500m for another year.
The conclusion of the championships now paves way for them to prepare for the annual Joint Services Championships in which Police are the defending champions.
