AN eight-year-old boy was yesterday afternoon killed on the spot after he was struck down by a speeding, out-of-control car on the Ruimzeigt Public Road, West Coast Demerara. The car ploughed into him as he stood on a bridge outside his home.
Dead is Joshua Daniels, who hails from Thomas’ Hill, Mabaruma Settlement, North West Region. A pupil of St. Joseph’s Primary School, Mabaruma, Joshua had just one week ago travelled to West Demerara with his mother, Margaret Moses, and five other siblings to attend a Convention of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, of which they are members. The convention is to be held at the National Park over the week-end.
Weeping uncontrollably as she tried to relate the details of the horrific accident at the West Demerara Regional Hospital last evening, Miss Moses who (along with her children) is putting up at a relative’s home at Ruimzeigt, West Coast Demerara, recalled that around 16:00 hrs, her three children were on the bridge.
Suddenly, as the motor car came speeding out of control, two of the children managed to dash into the yard, but Joshua froze where he was and the car struck him, killing him instantly.
He was rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
There was deep anguish at the hospital last evening as the mother and Joshua’s siblings embraced each other and wept uncontrollably.
“Oh no, no, no, I can’t believe that my baby is dead!” the grieving mother wailed as Joshua’s lifeless body was wheeled from the hospital to the mortuary.
The child, described by his mother as a dear, and loving, and very bright at school, was the fifth of six children to his parents, Margaret Moses and John Daniels, both of Mabaruma, North West Region.
The West Demerara Police are continuing their investigations.
