GSA produces more skills for agri sector
– 124 graduate in animal health, veterinary, forestry and fisheries fields
GOVERNMENT, as part of its commitment to transform and diversify the traditional agricultural sector, continues to invest in the development of human resources to carry on the transformational process.
Thousands of youths have been benefiting from training opportunities in various disciplines at several institutions, including agriculture at the Guyana School of Agriculture.

A batch 124 young Guyanese, Thursday, graduated with diplomas and certificates after completing 24 months of training in various fields, including animal health, veterinary public health, forestry and fisheries.
Minister of Agriculture, Robert Persaud, delivering his address to the graduates underscored the importance of agriculture to national development.
“That is why our Government has been investing in this institution so that it can provide the best for continuous transformation and growth of agriculture in our country.”
Government, he said continues to invest in excess of $300M annually on the institution, with trickle-down investment of $1M per student annually. “We are making that investment not only for your future, but we are also making that investment as part of what we are doing for the future of a competitive and bright agricultural sector.
“You have graduated at a time when the agricultural sector, the sector in which you have chosen your career, is undergoing rapid transformation, the expansion of all sub-sectors creating more opportunities.”
He also noted that graduates are entering the world of work at a time when the country is going through a phase of transformation and “changes that we have already started and more to come in the future that will bring a more substantial and improved life for all Guyanese”.
Minister Persaud also noted that the future developments of the country are in the hands of young Guyanese.
“Over the years, government has been doing all in its reach to create new opportunities for farmers, expanding and diversifying the sector so that at the end of the day, we can build a sector that brings about the type of benefits and type of results leading to a very global competitive and agri industrial sector that is very export-oriented,” Minister Persaud informed graduates.
He urged the graduates to always be cognizant of changes taking place in the agricultural sector, and “not only because you have graduated and some of you will be part of overall machinery that will be managing and facilitating the growth of agriculture, but we also want you to be leading players within the sector, we want you to be entrepreneur and leaders.”
He also informed the gathering that the country today requires every single citizen, especially every trained Guyanese, to be involved in all aspects of development, so as to fully realise the country’s true potential.
“We all need to be part of this process if we are to realize the true potential that our ancestors had been dreaming and yearning for,” Minister Persaud said.
He also noted that the PPP/C Government, since it took office in 1992, began the process of repairing the damage, consolidating its gains and building new sectors and opportunities.
“I want you to embrace this project, because …it belongs to you and the future generation of this country…we have made many mistakes as a country, and we have had generations here in Guyana that have failed us and our country and, while we have done a lot of work to repair and reconstruct, we need you to take control and move forward into the future,” Minister Persaud urged the graduates.
He also used the opportunity to inform the gathering about some of the new interventions and initiatives by the PPP/C Government to move Guyana forward as the leading producer of food in the Caribbean.
“On the coast we have nearly fully utilized our existing potentials, we are looking at developing lands for agricultural purposes in hinterland regions…where we possess some of the richest soil types,” he explained.
Minister Persaud also challenged the management of the GSA to train more persons, not only from the coast, but also from hinterland regions for the next academic year.
“We cannot transform and develop to the level we want to in the hinterland regions if for every service we need we have to be flying people from the coast, or depend on coastlanders; and so the next push of the GSA is to train more people from the hinterland areas,” Minister Persaud said.
Chief Executive Officer of Roraima Group of Companies, Captain Gerry Gouveia, delivering the charge to the graduates, said that they cannot develop to the level they want to, unless they develop the right attitude.
“Always give your best at what you do, always go beyond the call of duty, and most of all, love the people around you,” Captain Gouveia said.
Chief Executive Officer of the GSA, Brian Greenidge delivered the institution’s annual report for 2010/2011.
The GSA was established on September 9, 1963 at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara. This idea was the brainchild of the late Dr. Cheddi Jagan to promote and support agricultural development through education and training of young men and women interested in an agricultural and a forestry career.
Over the years, Government’s development plans for the institute saw the extension of the GSA to Region 2, while integrating the National Agricultural Research and Extension Institute (NAREI) to enable the GSA to benefit from the institute’s resources and capabilities. (GINA)
