GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – John Campbell proved his all-round value, propelling Jamaica to a come-from-behind, nine-wicket victory over Barbados in the WICB Regional Under-19 Championship yesterday.
Bowling his uncomplicated off-spin, Campbell scalped three wickets for 23 runs from 25.2 overs, as Barbados, leading by six on first innings, were bowled out for a paltry 63 in their second innings about an hour after lunch on the final day of the third round match.
The West Indies Under-19 batsmen then led the way with 45 not out, as the Jamaicans successfully chased 70 to claim victory about half-hour after tea at Enmore.
The result meant that Jamaica collected 12.4 points, moving to a total of 28, and Barbados earned 4.2, taking them to 20.3.
In the fourth round of matches, starting on Sunday, Barbados face sporting arch-rivals Trinidad & Tobago at the Demerara Cricket Club, and Jamaica meet Leeward Islands at Everest.
Starting the day on five without loss, Barbados ran into early trouble, and slumped to 44 for five at lunch.
James McDonald made the breakthrough for Jamaica, when he had opener Shane Parris caught at first slip for seven.
This wicket triggered a collapse that saw Barbados lose Shai Hope, their captain Kraigg Brathwaite, and Neil Browne for eight runs in the space of 62 balls.
Campbell bowled Hope for two, and had Browne caught at first slip for one either side of McDonald having Brathwaite caught at first slip for 13, leaving Barbados 29 for four.
Campbell set the Barbadians back further just before the interval, when Kyle Mayers was caught behind for five.
After lunch, the rot continued, when the next three Barbadian batsmen – Anthony Alleyne, Mario Rampersaud, and Chaim Holder – all fell lbw, leaving their side rocking on 51 for eight.
Nelson ensured there was no fightback, when he bowled Jerome Jones for a duck, and an inexplicable collision that led to the run-out of Amir Thomas brought the Barbadian innings to a calamitous climax.
Senior finished with two for four off eight overs, McDonald took two for six off six overs, and Nelson captured two for 14 off nine overs.
Brian Gayle was run-out for 16, as Jamaica embarked upon their chase with gusto, reaching 47 for one at tea before Campbell and Senior formalised the result after the break.
