GEORGETOWN, Guyana (CMC) – A lion-hearted effort by fast bowler Ray Jordan gave Windward Islands a share of the spoils against Trinidad and Tobago on a rain-affected opening day of their second round WICB Regional Under-19 tournament match yesterday.
Jordan, a strongly-built right-armer from St Vincent, ended the day with four wickets for 39 runs off 13 overs as Trinidad and Tobago closed on 219 for six wickets on a day when 20 overs were lost to rain.
Akeal Hosein hammered a top score of 68 while Kieron Joseph stroked 38 and Derone Davis got 29.
The match got started at the Guyana National Stadium 35 minutes late and had four other stoppages for inclement weather. Resuming today will be pint-sized left-hander Savion Lara on 17 and captain Stephen Katwaroo on 14.
Jordan started from the pavilion end in the morning session and made the breakthrough with two wickets.
Openers Christian Herrera (11) and Kieron Joseph (38) added 30 for the first wicket but the determined Jordan broke the stand when he had Herrera caught at short leg from a ball which lifted awkwardly.
The bowler then showed his athleticism when he jumped high to haul in a caught-and-bowl chance from Duane Cockburn (6).
Jordan shared the spotlight with left-hander Hosein, who made a stroke-filled half-century to follow up the 98 he made in the last match against Jamaica. He hit a six and seven fours off 126 balls but was well caught by Jordan running back from cover off left-arm spinner Larry Edward.
Jordan returned for a second spell from the Media Centre End and managed to get some reverse swing and trouble the middle-order batsmen.
He picked up the wickets of left-handers Isiah Rajah (21) and Davis (29) after the pair added 39 for the fifth wicket. Rajah was eventually trapped leg-before to a full, straight delivery and Davis had his defence breached by a superbly directed yorker-length delivery.
At that stage T&T were in trouble at 189 for six, but Lara and Katwaroo came together and added an unbroken 30 for the seventh wicket to make sure they lost no further wickets in the final half hour.
