DELTA Airlines has increased their flights from New York to Georgetown, which means that the airline will be offering daily flights between the two destinations until mid-September. Minister of Tourism, Industry and Commerce, Manniram Prashad made this announcement yesterday during a press briefing at his South Road office.
He explained: “There will be a Delta flight every day from New York to Georgetown, and we are happy by this increase.”
In addition to this, he said, the airline will also be employing the bigger 767 aircraft to accommodate the increase in demand associated with peak seasons, with the upshot being that they will be adequately able to cater for the influx of visitors expected to arrive here for the summer holidays.
He said discussions have also been initiated to introduce a direct flight from Toronto to Georgetown.
Addressing the notion that Delta will be interested in plying this route, Minister Prashad said that while initial discussions are underway, nothing has been finalized as yet to date. He also seized the opportunity to dispel the rumour going the rounds that Delta is planning to cease its operations here.
“This is not so; this is absolute nonsense,” the minister said, adding: “In fact, Delta officials are pleased with the NY/GT route and the facilities at the airport, and we are happy that this new service, which is excellent for Guyana, will cater for the influx of visitors.”
Meanwhile, Delta’s Guyana Manager, Mr. Junior Horatio explained that since the airline began operations here in 2008, it’s service has been nothing but exemplary and that because of the number of destinations its services worldwide, it has been able to afford Guyanese consumers and the travelling public every opportunity to go wherever in the world they please.
“Delta’s impact in the market has been nothing less than tremendous,” Horatio affirmed.
