Poor turnouts force AFC to cancel several public meetings

THE small opposition political party, the Alliance for Change (AFC), was forced to postpone several of its public meetings on account of  poor turnouts.

The party, on Thursday evening, turned up for a public meeting at Fort Ordnance, Canje, East Berbice, but no supporter reportedly turned out, forcing the cancellation of the meeting.

A similar situation is said to have obtained last Saturday when the party executives arrived at Cane Grove in Mahaica, East Coast Demerara for another public meeting and where only two persons reportedly turned up.

Speaking with the Chronicle, one of the party officials said it is “alarming” that the perceived supporters of the AFC are a “no show” at the meetings.

“We believe that a number of factors are responsible for this. First, it is poor planning on the part of our organizers in the various areas. Secondly, it may be the time that we planned the meetings for. I also believe that we have a huge task at hand as there seem to be a huge disconnect with the party executives and the grass root supporters and this is something that we have to deal with,” the official said.

The same official, who asked to remain anonymous, said he is “somewhat disappointed” that AFC supporters seem to be drifting away from the party.

The party also, on Wednesday, organized a public meeting for Sophia which was poorly attended with reportedly just three persons turning up, prompting the AFC officials to cut the meeting to just 15 minutes.

Chronicle spoke with several residents in the Sophia area who noted that they were “not interested” in the AFC.
