The Anna Regina Town Council has demolished several vendors’ structures that were illegally constructed on the shoulders of the street leading to the old Anna Regina Market.
Town Clerk Ganga Persaud said the decision to remove the illegal structures is a council’s decision. Persaud said the Town Council is not tolerating roadside vending and as such, the shoulders of the street have to be cleared of all obstacles.
He said all vendors selling along the roadside were warned several times to remove, but they never did.
The Town Clerk said there is enough space in the Anna Regina Market to accommodate all vendors.
Several vendors turned up at the Town Clerk office Friday morning to air their concerns about the demolition of their structures.
One vendor, Mary Williams, former Deputy Chairman of Region Two and who lives at Mainstay, said she is dissatisfied with the move by council. She said council never informed them that they would demolish or remove the structures on Thursday.
According to Williams, a pineapple farmer, she normally would sell pineapples to the public on Mondays and Fridays at the old Anna Regina Market on the road shoulders, just near the market entrance.
She said all her produce (pineapples) that she gathered up from her organic farm at Mainstay could not be brought to the Friday market.
However, at the meeting between vendors and the Town Clerk, vendors said it is unfair to them because other vendors were still selling their produce and goods on the street shoulders.
Town Clerk Mr Persaud advised vendors that there is space in the market and they must occupy stalls there. He said all vending on the street shoulders will be stopped.
