GTI crowned Georgetown Champions
THE Government Technical Institute (GTI) produced a sterling performance against Charlestown Secondary School to claim the Georgetown title of the inaugural Digicel Schools Football Championship at the Carifesta Sports Complex Ground, yesterday.
The young, yet experienced GTI team which consists of numerous players from the Fruta Conquerors team dominated both halves of the 70-minute encounter to defeat Charlestown 2–0 in the final showdown.
GTI commanded ball possession for the entire first half and drew first blood as early as the 13th minute when they finally got some passes together and exploited spaces. Darren Fraser was the GTI player to put Charlestown down by a goal.
Charlestown were playing under a bit of pressure in search of the equaliser but could not find it because GTI’s defenders often broke them down in the height of their runs while Charlestown’s goal was under heavy attack from the aggressive GTI team.
The second half resumed with the match still being a one possession game but four minutes in Charlestown were bumped down another notch, as a defensive error by Dennis Fung resulted in an own goal.
For the remainder of the match GTI kept attacking while a disheartened Charlestown side kept blocking until the end of regulation time.
