Free school uniform programme shows government’s commitment to excellence in education

AGAIN, the government has committed to distributing free school uniforms across the country as a way of ensuring that no child is left behind when it comes to education. The initiative, called the school uniform programme, will benefit many less fortunate families, who may find difficulty purchasing school uniforms for their children.

Also, Amerindian and hinterland children will benefit from this programme. According to the press release, published in the Guyana Chronicle of June 27, 2011, the government committed $300 million to see this initiative through. It is expected that 200,000 students nationwide will receive free uniforms from the government under this initiative.

Of the $300 million given for this programme, $63.2 million will be expended to ensure that at least 30,000 Amerindian and hinterland students also benefit from the free uniforms that are to be distributed.

The news report in which this article was featured gives a clear indication that the current administration is committed to excellence in education and to improving the quality of education each child receives, by ensuring that every child has the basic necessities for school.

I can only hope that parents realize the need to invest their time and energies into their children’s education, and children, that they are also responsible for their own education and make a special effort to ensure that these uniforms serve their purpose.
