. . . remanded for night, fined next day
Linda Munroe of Lot 324 `BB’ Eccles, East Bank Demerara, who on June 15, last, was caught red-handed stealing electricity from the Guyana Power & Light (GPL), was last week ordered to pay a fine of $40, 000 or alternatively spend two months in jail.
Munroe, however, spent Thursday night on remand, on the orders of Magistrate Leslie Sobers sitting in the Providence Magistrate’s Court, when she made her first court appearance on Thursday to answer to the charge of ‘fraudulent abstract of electricity from GPL supply’.
According to the particulars of the case, at about 14:30 hrs on June 15, last, employees of GPL under the supervision of a rank from the Guyana Police Force (GPL) were in the Eccles area on an exercise to determine illegal connections to buildings.
On entering the defendant’s home, an illegal connection was observed attached to a meter which led to her being cautioned, arrested and charged with the offence. (Wendella Davidson)
