GOVERNMENT’S focus on ensuring that children’s literacy levels improve has led it to budget $1.5billion towards this effort this year, and during the August holidays, the Education Ministry will host remedial classes for students who would have performed unsatisfactorily at the end-of-term examination. The ministry has initialized the programme in an effort to reduce the number of repeaters in schools. Beginning last year, the programme seeks to improve students’ performance level by preparing them for the next school year’s curriculum.
During the August holiday, students across the country at the primary level in Grades 2, 3, 4, and 6, and Grades 7 and 8 at the secondary levels will benefit from six weeks of classes in Mathematics and English.
It is hoped that students will be empowered by the classes, and function better in the next school year.
The remedial classes will be executed by teachers trained in the delivery of the subjects at reference.
Classes will comprise 15 students with one teacher, allowing each student the opportunity to receive individual attention.
The ministry will provide participating schools with the necessary learning materials. (GINA)
