CHARLES Sohan graced the letter pages of the Stabroek News bellyaching about the use of the BK facility in the Mazaruni to host the CARICOM retreat which he suggested presented a conflict of interest. Sohan was not clear on why this presents a conflict of interest. I think that maybe because some of us are closeted in our own world we do not understand that the practice of having such important meets at different locations serve as an opportunity for a country to showcase its beauty.
I think that for any meeting of that nature, the country is provided with a unique opportunity to highlight another of its attractions and this opportunity encourages capitalisation. The idea of such an important meeting being held on Guyana’s shores, would suggest even to the man on the street, that the best of what here is should be offered.
In this case, BK’s facility was found to be meeting the requirements taking into consideration the suitability of its location and the security concerns. Despite the fact that the facility may not be open to the public, the fact that it was perhaps equipped with necessary amenities and niceties made it a choice that was considered and chosen.
Obviously, this would not have been the only place that was selected at first, the persons in charge of organising the event would have had several places to consider but why is this being such an issue when the nation has other important things to consider?
I think this is just the usual bellyaching, this time in the person of Sohan, who would find every opportunity, whether they exist or not, to criticise. Where does it end? I would like to remind the readers that it doesn’t take much to criticise but the real challenge is this. Why not make a constructive proposal for the next CARICOM retreat in Guyana?
