Home Affairs Minister urges residents to give pertinent information to police

The Home Affairs Ministry’s Community Policing Group (CPG) outreach continued on Friday evening with portfolio Minister Clement Rohee and his team visiting residents of Annandale, East Coast Demerara.
The objective of the outreach programme, which sees the minister and his team visiting various communities along the East Coast of Demerara, is to foster better relations among residents with members of their CPGs and members of the police force.
Some of the issues raised by residents and CPG members are the noise nuisance, school children bus-riding, and police not giving their utmost to crime-fighting in the area. One recommendation was for a refresher course.
Gavin Primo, Commander of  “C” Division, told residents that they must visit police stations to give statements, especially in noise nuisance matters. He said that whilst the noise nuisance must be contained and there is a way in dealing with it, individuals ought to come forward and give statements so that perpetrators can be prosecuted.
Primo stated that the police are in a state of readiness to hold a refresher course with CPG members and retraining of persons who are firearm holders. However, individuals must band themselves together and make the request which will be facilitated.
Minister Rohee stated that the issues raised by residents are not new, as they are commonly found throughout the country.  He said that the massive drug find in the Mazaruni River, not far from Bartica, followed an alert from residents who noticed strange men in the area in a fast boat, traversing up and down the river. They informed the police, and the police, acting on the information successfully made a bust.
He said information is therefore critical so residents ought not to sit idly by on pertinent information. They should find someone they can trust and disseminate such information in a timely manner so that the law enforcement body can be effective in its endeavours.
Minister Rohee also stated that criminal gangs ought to be dismantled; therefore the police need to be more thorough in their investigative work, so as to secure more convictions when matters are placed before the courts
“It is therefore important that we consistently and continuously work so as to achieve our desired results for a safer Guyana for all. We therefore have to be strong and have the will. Further, the community and those outside of the law enforcement body have to be strong, as persons may try to dissuade you from giving information to enforcement personnel,” Minister Rohee said.
