DIGICEL Guyana on Friday donated $500,000 to Art Director, Ms. Collette Jones-Chin, who operates the Young @ Art School for the development of arts in Guyana. The presentation was made at Digicel’s Headquarters, Fort and Barrack Streets, Kingston, Georgetown where Public Relations Manager, Shonett Moore, and Marketing Executive, Tamara Clarke presented the cheque to Art Director, Collette Jones-Chin on behalf of the school.
Moore said Digicel is pleased to be associated with the Young @ Art programme in which it is geared towards the development of creative skills and the building of expressions in students.
Art Director, Collette Jones-Chin told reporters that the Young @ Art programme is geared towards the engagement of students in being creative and develop them into well-rounded individuals.
Ms. Jones-Chin displayed various arts pieces of interest which were created by her as well as young students. Some of the pieces displayed include the stain glass technique, collage, abstract pieces that portray emotions and several water colour pieces.
The Young @ Art programme was designed with the intention of encouraging children to explore their limitations of creativity by using the Visual and Theatre Arts. The programme was orchestrated to teach various techniques in a supportive and fun environment. Technical skills will be taught, with guidance. Children will examine themes through drawing, painting, sculpture, printing etc.; in a fun and experimental manner. The Young @ Art Summer Programme will engage students between the ages of four to 15 and over in art, craft, dance, voice training/music and sporting activities which will commence on July 11, 2011 at 9am to 1pm at Foundation “7” which is located in the compound of the Church of the Nazarene, Laluni and Irving Streets, Queenstown.
The Young @ Art is offering five courses but with the fee of $6,000 students can pick three with two days per week classes.
The three weeks will culminate with a tea party which will highlight a grand theatrical production and art exhibition of the children’s work. Students will ultimately present their work, which will serve as entertainment, ‘edutainment’ and exhibition at Umana Yana on July 30, 2011 from 3pm. The show will not be only for children but also grownups as well.
The objective of the Young @ Art Summer Programme is to inculcate in the minds of youths, a new form of creative thinking.
The programmes include providing fun, developing skills, encouraging craftsmanship, building self-confidence and expression.
