IF you believe what you read from opposition supporters, all problems originate in the other party and not with them. Guyana may have the three “P” problems-political parties, public servants and the public at large. Political parties need to focus on solutions and not blame. The government, despite its many achievements, has been unable to make ministers, public servants, and the security services more effective and accountable to a much more acceptable level.
The opposition simply opposes instead of proposing, while waiting for victory or shared power, even as they fail to use whatever power they do have. Surely, with so many “Afro-Guyanese” in the Public Service, many with significant, influential positions, one would expect some of them even with the suggested ministerial interference and fear of job loss claims, would use existing laws and conscience to prevent marginalisation to the claimed degree many say exist. Courtesy, Respect and Professionalism do not require power, just decency. The public cannot use claimed PPP corruption to excuse criminal acts or their own responsibility to obey the laws, combat corruption, vandalism and participate in making governance and security efforts more effective. What good are commissions and committees if they are not meeting or working?
