Botanical Gardens robber jailed, three others accused remanded

CHRISTOPHER Smith, 22, one of four men who faced robbery under arms charges, yesterday, was sentenced to 18 months imprisonment by Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry.
He admitted that, on June 16, he robbed Tasha Persaud, at knifepoint, of a handbag, a cellular phone and cash, booty valued a total $82,000.
Police Corporal Venetta Pindar, prosecuting, said the virtual complainant and her boyfriend were in the Botanical Gardens when Smith attacked her, placed a knife to her neck and took her belongings.
The prosecutor said the woman raised an alarm and police ranks chased and caught Smith in a nearby trench, with the stolen articles in his possession.
The prisoner (no address given) told the court his mother and father are dead and he was trying to get something to eat, but said he was sorry for attacking the woman with a broken bottle.
The other men on a similar charge, Travis Evans, of Lot 55 Norton Street, John Sampson, of Lot 16/17 Ruimvedlt and Alex Williams, of Lot 145 Turning Point, all in Georgetown, are charged indictably, with having committed the offence on October 30 last.
Particulars of the indictable offence said they robbed Marlyn Kissoon of one cellular phone, one flash drive, one DVD player and other things worth $670,500.
Prosecutor Pindar successfully objected to bail for the trio, on the ground that they have previous charges pending, their case was put off to July 5.
