$65.7M contracts signed to boost security sector

CONTRACTS for $65.7M, in current and capital expenditure, were signed on Wednesday at the Ministry of Home Affairs, in Brickdam, Georgetown.
The expense is to boost the security sector through the rehabilitation of police stations and prisons and construction of police outposts.
Four new police outposts will be constructed at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne and Abary in Berbice; North Ruimveldt in Georgetown and Hogg Island in Essequibo.

The signing ceremony took place in the presence of Minister Clement Rohee, who said the contractors will not be pardoned if works are not completed by the stipulated time.
To quicken the process, he urged that the workers employed be made to toil during the evenings.
He reminded that this year is a crucial one, in light of elections and, as such, the jobs must be done.
Rohee said there will also be meetings where contractors will face the community so they can hear the concerns of residents.
One of the contracts is for a $25M Guyana Fire Service (GFS) Training School, another for the $5.7M Mahaica Fire Station and others for four Police outposts and the rehabilitation of eight Police stations.
The minister explained that, of the $65.7M in awards, 28 percent amounting to $27.4M went to construct police stations; 72 percent or $38.2M to the rehabilitation of police stations; $28.6M to prisons; $31.1M to the GFS and $4.2M to the General Registrar’s Office. (Michel Outridge)
