Police still awaiting DNA results from Barbados
MINISTER of Home Affairs, Clement Rohee, yesterday said they are still awaiting the DNA results from Barbados in the Sheema Mangar murder case.
He said, “Only recently I made an inquiry regarding the police acquiring the DNA results from Barbados, but we haven’t received any so far,” he said.
The minister recognizes the dissatisfaction the delay has caused in some quarters, but he observed that DNA testing cannot be rushed and the authorities in Barbados probably have a long list of similar requests to attend to.
“So we have to join the line until such time as we have the capacity here for DNA testing,” he said.
He said, “I am assured that the police are following leads that they come across from time to time, and I don’t consider this a cold case.”
Former Demerara Bank employee, Sheema Mangar, 20, was victim of the robbery some time after 18:00 hrs as she waited for transportation on North Road in Georgetown on September 10 last year.
She chased the robber who jumped into the car that dragged her from outside Bedford Methodist Church, at Camp Street and North Road, to the intersection of Camp and Church Streets.
She died hours later at St Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Two suspects were arrested but were released due to lack of evidence.
Investigators took bits of fabric retrieved from under the car that ran Mangar over, and these were sent to Barbados for testing.
