AS part of the move by the administration to rectify the deplorable conditions of Le Repentir cemetery, Minister of Transport and Hydraulics Robeson Benn and members of the Cemetery Restoration Committee yesterday visited several parts of the cemetery to carry out an assessment.
Minister Benn told the Government Information Agency that the visit was specifically to evaluate the work that must be done.
Expressing disappointment at the deplorable condition of the cemetery, Minister Benn said that work will soon commence to enhance the area.
“We have a broad committee structure and plans and proposals in place which will be pursued during a meeting with members of City Hall as to how we will advance this process,” Minister Benn said.
Benn while expressing optimism about the process hopes that once the facility is brought up to a better standard, that this will be maintained.
“The restoration speaks largely about drainage works and removal of vegetation both on the eastern and western half of the cemetery,” he said.
He also noted that his ministry is proposing an initial amount of $76M to conduct the restoration works.
The Restoration Committee consists of representatives from the Ethnic Relations Commission, the National Trust, Chinese Association, Ministry of Local Government and Regional Development, the Mayor and City Council and the National Parks Commission.
