AN UNIDENTIFIED man succumbed on the Regent Street, Georgetown pavement yesterday morning, after he had asked for water and cried out for help.
It was outside Bourda Market that he died after falling where he vomited and was given the drink by a kind passerby.
A fruit vendor, who did not give her name, told the Guyana Chronicle that, around 10:00hrs, she observed the man staggering towards her and, before she could react, he stumbled and fell into her tub of tomatoes.
She said a shower of rain drenched him as he was still lying on the pave, where he remained for quite sometime until he stopped breathing and an alarm was raised.
A rank from the City Constabulary Outpost in Bourda Market telephoned for an ambulance but the attendants awaited the arrival of the police and a hearse to take away the deceased.
The dead man was shirtless but wearing navy blue pants and his head was resting on a black haversack which, when opened, contained an ice cream cup and personal possessions.
Other vendors said that they knew the man by seeing him around the market but not his name nor other particulars.
As the corpse lay on the Bourda Market pavement, scores of passersby stopped to get a glimpse of it but the identification remained unknown up to press time.
