Digicel throws support behind GBBC’s RAMPAGE

TELECOMMUNICATIONS service provider Digicel continued to support the development of sports in Guyana, when they contributed to the  Guyana Boxing Board of Control’s (GBBC) upcoming card dubbed RAMPAGE yesterday. At a simple presentation ceremony held in the boardroom of Abdool and Abdool Insurance Limited, GBBC’s president Peter Abdool received a cheque for G$1M from Public Relations Manager of Digicel Shonnet Moore.
In  brief remarks, Moore said her company was delighted to be a part of not only the card, but also the development of sports in Guyana on the whole.
“Digicel is very committed towards the development of sports in Guyana and in this case, boxing, hence our partnering with the GBBC in sponsoring their Friday Night Fights (FNF) and now their upcoming card dubbed RAMPAGE.
Just recently, we sponsored the second annual President’s/Jefford Classic in Linden, which featured Guyana’s best athlete in Aliann Pompey, while we also sponsor other sports such as football, cricket, golf, horse racing and even dominoes.”
She continued, “We see sports as one of the avenues in which we can give back to the country and certainly we will continue to support sports in Guyana, while we take the opportunity to wish the GBBC all the best with their upcoming card on Saturday.”
In his thank-you remarks, Abdool highlighted his board’s association with the company which started approximately 16 months ago with the commencement of the first Friday Night Fights.
“First of all, let me say that RAMPAGE is not the ordinary FNF, but rather a culmination of it. I have said from the time the boxers signed to face their opponents for this card, that RAMPAGE is a culmination of the FNF.
“Were it not for Digicel and our other list of sponsors, RAMPAGE would not have been possible, since the fighters who will be appearing on the card this Saturday, have at some time or the other plied their trade on the FNF,” said Abdool.
He added, “Digicel has been a strong supporter of the GBBC and boxing on the whole and were it not for them, we would not have our fighters fighting for Regional titles and later on world titles, and I wish to extend heartfelt congratulation to their Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Gregory Deen and their long list of employees, for their continued support.”
Meanwhile, the two overseas boxers, Lennox ‘Too Sharp’ Allen and Elton ‘Coolie Bully’ Dharry, and their management team will be arriving in Guyana on Thursday, while the weigh-in for the fight takes place the following day at the Regency Suites from 19:30hrs.
Allen will battle national light heavyweight champion Kwesi Jones for the World Boxing Council (WBC)/Caribbean Boxing Federation (CABOFE) super middleweight title, while Dharry will face Dexter Marques for the WBC/CABOFE bantamweight title.
Mitchell Rogers will defend his national heavyweight title when he faces national cruiserweight champion Kurt Bess in what can be deemed ‘The Decider’, since both fighters had recorded a victory over each other in the two times they had met.
Cecil Smith will battle Ray Sandiford in a lightweight encounter with the other professional bout on the card being an eliminator where Edmond De Clou and Winston Pompey will meet in a super middleweight fight, with the winner facing national champion Howard Eastman for his title.
